Loggerhead sea turtles are ready to hatch on my beach!

By

Sea turtles are fascinating creatures! We have lots of sea turtle nests here on our beach that are just about ready to hatch! I’m very excited and check our nests everyday to look for signs of hatchlings.
There are seven types of sea turtles still living….
They are The Green sea turtle, Hawksbill, Leatherback, Flatback, Loggerhead, Kemp Ridley and Olive Ridley. Here on the west cost of Florida we normally have Loggerhead sea turtles but sometimes we have Kemp Ridley sea turtles hatch!!!
Sea turtles can live from 50 to 80 years old.
Sea turtles lay around 100 eggs in a nest and only one out of 1,000 makes it to be a adult!

After the mom sea turtle lays her eggs, it takes about 60 days before they are ready to hatch.

Here is a picture of baby sea turtles hatching!!!

Chicks

By

Have you ever seen Black Skimmer Chicks hatch before?
On my beach there is a colony of Black Skimmer eggs that are hatching! They lay about 4 eggs at a time and then go back next year to lay the eggs again! The eggs have black pink and brown speckles! image
When the Black Skimmers hunt for food, they fly right above the water with their beak skimming the ocean! When they catch a fish they snap the beak closed to trap the fish in their beak! Then they carry it back to the hungry chicks!image
It does not take long for the baby chicks to grow bigger!
