Stone Crab season

Have you ever tasted stone crab? Stone crab is a delicacy found in the Gulf Coast of Florida. Stone crab is a sustainable food source. When you harvest a claw it will grow it back by the next Stone crab season. Stone crab season starts on October 15th and it ends on May 15th. You are only allowed to take the claw if it is over 2 3/4 inches. You measure it from the tip of the claw to what looks like the elbow. You can tell Stone crab apart from other crabs because of it’s distinctive look. Here is a picture of a Stone crab.

How you get the claw of a Stone crab.
I use tongs to get the crab out of the trap. Once you have a good grip on the crab with the tongs you take gardening shears and cut of one of the claws. You can use your hands but if you use your hands you can take meat out of their thorax and then there is a 30% chance that they will die. Also, you can take both claws but then you leave the crab defenseless and it won’t be able to eat.If you put their claw towards their eyes they can’t move the claw. If you get pinched by a Stone crab, it really hurts, I advise you to put on thick gloves if it is your first time and don’t get pinched.

With the fish head in the picture I caught 10 stone crab. The smellier the better. If you want to catch blue crab chicken bones and a little meat is perfect. I use fish heads for my bait. Here is a picture of the Stone Crab claws that I caught.

Egg in the nest

An egg in the nest is a egg surrounded in toast.Turn on your stove burner to medium! Then make sure you put a little pat of butter on your skillet! You will tear a circle shaped hole in the bread and put it on the skillet. Then crack your egg into the hole. Wait 1-2 minutes before flipping your egg in the nest. Wait another 1-2 minutes before placing the egg in the nest on your plate! Then to make your egg in the nest spectacular, sprinkle 1/8 of a teaspoon of sea salt on it! Also, on the middle piece I would suggest jelly to flavor the toast! Below are the ingredients that you will need to make one egg in the nest. Enjoy!

1 large egg
1/8 tsp of sea salt
Jelly (if you want)

Fun things to do in Hawaii

One of my favorite things I did in Hawaii was riding Dolphins at Sea Life Park. My sister and I got to do the Royal Dolphin Swim! We were in the chilly water with the Dolphins for about an hour. On of my favorite tricks was when the dolphins put their mouths on my feet and pushed me out of the water….it was very thrilling! I also had dolphin kisses and a double dorsal fin ride. If you are in Hawaii, I highly suggest a visit to sealife park for a royal dolphin adventure!

Loggerhead sea turtles are ready to hatch on my beach!

Sea turtles are fascinating creatures! We have lots of sea turtle nests here on our beach that are just about ready to hatch! I’m very excited and check our nests everyday to look for signs of hatchlings.
There are seven types of sea turtles still living….
They are The Green sea turtle, Hawksbill, Leatherback, Flatback, Loggerhead, Kemp Ridley and Olive Ridley. Here on the west cost of Florida we normally have Loggerhead sea turtles but sometimes we have Kemp Ridley sea turtles hatch!!!
Sea turtles can live from 50 to 80 years old.
Sea turtles lay around 100 eggs in a nest and only one out of 1,000 makes it to be a adult!

After the mom sea turtle lays her eggs, it takes about 60 days before they are ready to hatch.

Here is a picture of baby sea turtles hatching!!!

“Eight class pets +one squirrel \ one dog=chaos” By Vivian Vande Velde

This is a short 68 page book about a dog chasing a squirrel!

It all started when the squirrel saw a owl chasing him!

The squirrel then ran into the principal’s dog and got trapped in the school for one whole night!

I highly recommend this book if you have a dog, cat or you like animals!

I hope you enjoy the book!

The Great Smoky Mountains

The great Smoky mountains is a superb place to find wildlife!!!
My favorite place in the Smoky Mountains was Cade’s Cove!
There I found lots of wildlife including deer, snakes, bears and even blue tailed skinks!!! The deer we found were young juvenile bucks with velvet antlers.

This is a cool fact about blue tailed skinks:
When a predator try’s to eat them, the predator is attracted to the blue tail and goes for the blue tail and the blue tail breaks off! Most times the tail grows back the color of their skin but some times it will grow back pink!!!!

Black bears can run up to 35 miles an hour!
They can weigh up to 400 pounds!!!
Even though their name is black bears they can still be different colors! They can be cinnamon colored and some times not often they can be white!!!
Black bears stay with their mother for two years!
